How do I calibrate the KH Manager 'Saltwater' pump? | D-D The Aquarium Solution
Question:

How do I calibrate the KH Manager 'Saltwater' pump?

Answer:

The KH Manager will reliably monitor and control the KH /pH in your aquarium but requires correct calibration and maintenance, failure to do this will cause failed tests and incorrect or inconsistent readings.

Calibrating the ‘Salt Water In’ Pump

To make sure the water sample volume taken by the KH Manager is correct it is important that the ‘Saltwater In’ pump is calibrated properly.

Important notes before calibrating

  • All pipework / connections from the aquarium through the machine and to the test beaker must be clean and free of blockages.
  • If used any intake strainer will need to be clean and free of debris.
  • Any worn components of the ‘Saltwater In’ pump head should be replaced/renewed before calibration.
  • All pipework Joints and connections need to be secure and not allowing air into the line.
  • Scales used for calibration need to be placed on a flat, stable and level surface to weigh accurately, it is recommended to only use the scales that come with the KH Manager. Digital kitchen scales and the like will generally have a broader weight range and will not have the appropriate accuracy.
  • Calibrate the unit in situ with all the pipework that is going to be connected in normal use, changes in pipework length, head height and positioning may alter the calibration.

Performing the Calibration

  1. Log into the Kamoer Remote app and select the tile icon for your KH Manager. Then go to ‘Settings’ in the bottom right, Maintain / Calibration / Saltwater Pump / Go to calibrate.
  2. Make sure you have the glass beaker and digital scales ready to perform the calibration, remove the front cover/ probe holder from the KH Manager by pulling it forwards exposing the tubes.
  3. When prepared tap ‘I’m ready’ in the app.
  4. Place the glass beaker in the base of the unit under the short tube that is on the far right as you look at the unit.
  5. In the Kamoer Remote app tap on the ‘Run’ button to start the pump head and flush the tubing. Once water is flowing into the glass beaker and there are no air bubbles in the tubing tap the ‘Stop’ button.
  6. In the app add a run time for the pump calibration by tapping on the number under ‘Input add time’, it is recommended that the longest available time of 60 seconds is used for the most accurate calibration.
  7. Select ‘I’ve finished setting’ at the bottom of the screen to continue.
  8. Place the digital scales on a stable, flat and level surface then power on and remove the protective plastic covers.
  9. Switch the scales to read in grams by depressing the mode (M) button until ‘g’ is shown.
  10. Remove the glass beaker from the KH Manager and empty out any liquid, then place the empty glass beaker on the scales.
  11. Press the Tare button (T) to zero the scales and compensate for the weight of the glass beaker then select ‘I’ve tared’ at the bottom of the screen in the app.
  12. Leave the scales on and remove the glass beaker, the display will show the weight of the beaker as a minus number.
  13. Place the glass beaker back in the base of the unit under the short tube that is on the far right as you look at the unit.
  14. In the app tap ‘Start adding’ to begin running the pump, the screen will show a countdown in seconds as the pump runs.
  15. Once the pump stops running tap ‘Add ended’ at the bottom of the screen.
  16. Put the glass beaker back on the scales, make sure the minus weight is still displayed before placing the beaker. This will give you the weight of the water minus the glass beaker.
  17. Enter the weight given on the scales into the app. The specific gravity of the water will need to be known to complete this step. The app automatically uses an SG value of 1.022, if the water that has been weighed differs from this then the correct value will need to be entered. To do this tap on ‘modify “SG”’, enter the actual value and then select save in the top right corner.
  18. Finish the calibration by tapping ‘Calibrate’ at the bottom of the screen. The app will confirm the calibration is done, tap ‘Ok’ to confirm and save. The app will return you to the Saltwater Pump Calibration page after the above steps are completed.

It is advisable to set the reminder for periodically calibrating the pump head, to do this tap on the box displaying the ‘Last Time’ and ‘Next Time’, enter the number of days, then save in the top right corner. For accurate testing it is suggested for this to be set to 45-60 days, after this time has elapsed a warning will appear on the screen in the app to remind you that calibration is due.

For most installations the calibration of the pump should report a ‘Flow Rate’ figure between 28ml/min and 31.5ml/min. If the result displayed in the ‘Saltwater Pump Calibration’ page is outside this range there may have been an error in calibration or there is restriction/blockage/air leak in the pipework. Check all pipework and then repeat the calibration instructions above.

Checking the Calibration

To test the calibration of the pump go to Settings / Maintain / Running Pumps tap on the blue arrow next to ‘Saltwater Pump’ and enter 10ml followed by save in the top right corner. Remove the front cover / probe holder and the glass beaker from the KH Manager and hold the 10ml plastic measuring cylinder provided with the unit under the saltwater in pipe. Tap ‘Run’ next to ‘Saltwater Pump’ in the app to start the pump running, when finished place the measuring cylinder on a flat surface and with your eyeline at the same heigh as the surface of the water in the cylinder observe the amount of water dispensed, as shown in the image below. If the volume is 10ml the calibration is good, if the amount is incorrect the calibration procedure will need to be repeated. Repeated failures in correct calibration could indicate that there is a blockage or restriction in the pipework that will need to be resolved for correct calibration.
