Question:

I want to run a native temperate or coldwater aquarium, what size chiller do I need?

Answer:

Our chillers are rated for cooling tanks down to normal tropical temperatures eg 25-270c.

The controll panel can be set as low as 40c, but for the chiller to be able to actually achive this will depend on external factors. These include,

  • Volume of water to be chilled.
  • Ambient room temperature.
  • Position of the chiller.
  • Tank insulation.
  • Water flow rate.
  • External heat sources, eg. lights, pumps, direct sunlight.

These factors will all have to be consided when choosing the correct size chiller for the situation.

For example a DC750 chiller is capeable of bringing down the temperature of a 300 litre aquarium by 100c, provided it is in a well ventelated area, the room temperature is not significantly higher than the desired tank temperature, and there are no major external factors adding heat to the aquarium. If the ambient room temperature increases the ability of the chiller to cool the this far will be reduced.

To bring the temperature of an aquarium down far below the ambient foom temperature it may be necessary to insulate the sides and top of the aquarium or have a specialist double glazed aquarium manufactured. The chiller would also have to be housed in a well ventelated area away from the aquarium as the it will produce heat from the heat exchanger warming the air in the room.
