Question:
Is it possible to check that the KH Manager Test Reagent is mixed properly and good to use?
Answer:
The KH Manager has a function to check the KH Test Reagent and confirm if it is good to use. If the mixed reagent is incorrect it can have dramatic effects on the KH test results.
Important notes before using the reagent checker function
- For this function to work properly the pH probe will need to be clean and correctly calibrated, to see instructions on how to do this click HERE.
- The reagent must be made and stored in a suitable, clean, inert container.
- Reagent should be stirred well before taking a sample to check.
Performing the reagent check
- Carefully decant approximately 25-30ml of the well mixed KH Manager Test Reagent into a suitable, water tight, clean, food grade plastic bag.
- Close the top of the bag and hang the bag in your aquarium or sump using a clothes peg or suitable clip to keep the top of the bag out of the water and stop it being drawn in to pumps or the reagent from being released into the tank.
- Leave the reagent to sit for 4-5 minutes to warm up, ideally the reagent needs to be at 250C for the reagent check to be 100% accurate but +/- 20C will be ok if the mixing instructions for the reagent have been followed correctly.
- Log into the Kamoer Remote app and tap on the device icon for your KH Manager.
- Select the settings icon in the bottom right corner, when the settings page is displayed tap on ‘Maintain’ followed by ‘Availability of “KH Test Reagent”’.
- Remove the warmed bag of reagent from the sump or aquarium and sit the open bag in a cup or glass to hold it in place (do not tip the reagent into the cup or glass as this may cause contamination).
- Carefully rinse the tip of the probe in some room temperature water then dry by gently shaking the probe and using a paper towel to remove obvious drops of water. It is best to avoid touching the glass bulb directly with the paper towel.
- Place the probe in the test reagent sample and gently stir to remove any air bubbles making sure the tip of the probe is fully submerged in the reagent, leave the probe standing and allow to settle for two minutes.
- After this time, in the app, tap on the small circle on the screen next to ‘I have let it settle for 2 minutes’ to confirm the probe is ready and then select ‘Check’ at the bottom of the screen to begin. After a few second a pop up will appear on the screen showing ‘Reagent Available’ if it is good to use or ‘Reagent Unavailable’ if the reagent is out of the acceptable range for performing an accurate test.
- Tap ‘ok’ to confirm and then the blue arrow in the top left corner to exit the ‘Maintain’ screen.
If the reagent is out of the acceptable range for use it should be safely discarded and a fresh solution made. To check the correct method for making the KH Manager Test Reagent click HERE.
